Mechanical Design Intern

We are looking for Mechanical Design interns who want responsibility and ownership over meaningful challenges that can impact the company immediately and into the future. We seek to unleash these inquisitive and problem-solving interns on individual projects and as members of our teams paired with guidance and mentorship from our experienced engineers. We know our team members do their best work when they are working on projects that excite them, so we try to match our interns to projects related to their interests.  

At Maxentric, our teams work on a variety of cross-discipline R&D projects born out of the ideas of our engineers. Our current projects focus on the networking, wireless communication, health, and artificial intelligence fields and range from early exploratory efforts to commercial product transitions. The supporting teams of electrical and software engineers, as well as university research partners, provide constant exposure to new ideas and inspiration and a set of helpful experts as we work to develop the future. This position will be based out of MaXentric’s California office in downtown La Jolla or our New Jersey location in Fort Lee, just outside of Manhattan, NYC.  

Overall, we are looking for energetic candidates who are innovative, curiosity-driven, willing to explore new ideas, and are strong team players with excellent communication skills.  

This would be a temporary position for the Summer of 2026.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Will help draft and submit proposals for engineering designs with innovative solutions.  

  • Will support research and development for novel solutions to cutting edge engineering projects. 

  • Works with engineers on specified projects based upon departmental needs. 

  • Assigned projects may include creation of drawings, design of components and assemblies, and development of electro-mechanical drawings, assemblies, and instructions. 

  • Applies academic knowledge and principles of engineering to hands-on projects that increase product performance, improve quality and manufacturability, and reduce costs. 

  • May conduct feasibility studies on new and modified designs. 

  • Support personnel in preparation of detailed design, design testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing. 

  • Collaborate in engineering product development, testing, and scientific research activities. 

  • Works in a multi-disciplinary group with other Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Control Engineers, and Software Engineers to modify existing designs, produce designs, and prototype hardware for internal and external customers.  

  • Performs other engineering duties as assigned or required.  

Education/Experience

  • Actively pursuing BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. Sophomore standing or higher is preferred. 

  • Ability to perform assigned tasks and complete work on schedule with minimal supervision. 

  • Use your hands-on knowledge and skills to participate in multiple phases of our Engineering/Manufacturing Design & Development process. 

Basic Qualifications  

  • Relocation and/or housing is not available for this position. Student should be in a commutable distance to San Diego, CA, with reliable transportation. 

  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals, mathematics, physics, material properties. 

  • Able to excel in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment, where small teams share a broad variety of duties. 

  • Has effective problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Well-organized, reliable, good attention to detail, demonstrates personal initiative. 

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload.  

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate work with others. Good communication skills. 

  • Able to build BOM’s and assembly work instructions. 

  • Comfortable with drafting proposals and reports for future engineering endeavors. 

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Thrives on innovation and challenge. 

  • Focuses on teamwork and collaboration to ensure project success. 

  • Proficient with 3D modeling in SolidWorks and 2D modeling in AutoCAD, as well as other CAD programs. 

  • Experience with hands-on prototyping projects 

  • Ability to prototype with in-house manufacturing equipment such as 3D printers (FDM or SLA) and laser cutters  

  • Experience with mechanical and electromechanical assemblies preferred.  

  • An EIT (Engineer in Training) certificate is desirable.  

  • Production and fabrication experience is a plus. 

  • Understanding of GD&T.  

  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office applications. 

  • Experience working with cross-functional R&D development teams.
